Block Printing at Cargot
As part of Portland Textile Month, Laundry Workshops is collaborating with Cargo to offer a special in-store class all about block printing, textiles and art. Participants will learn how to design, carve and print symmetrical tile patterns that will repeat endlessly when printed. Tote bags and a variety of special hand-made papers from Cargo will be provided. Since we are fortunate enough to have the workshop in Cargo, you can use the store’s unique inventory for inspiration to help you create your design. Cargo’s co-owner Patty Merrill will take us on a short journey through the history of this tradition using real life examples to show how tiles and block-printing have been used to adorn walls, furniture and fabrics in a variety of cultures throughout time.
You will walk away with all the tools, materials, and skills you will need to continue this creative process at home. Your tile can also be used to print on other items such as fabric yardage, tee shirts, wrapping paper etc. The sky’s the limit once you master this simple and amazingly flexible technique.
This class will be taught by Jennifer Stady, owner of the local design business, Laundry Studio. Jennifer teaches Pattern Design at Portland State University as well as workshops in her studio.
Lunch from Giraffe (inside Cargo) will be served.
What to bring? If you’re worried about getting paint or ink on your clothing, we suggest wearing something where it won’t matter too much. Thats it! Everything else will be provided.
